Course Overview

Offered in partnership with the North West Ambulance Service (NWAS) NHS Trust, the 新加坡六合彩开奖直播鈥檚 BSc (Hons) Paramedic Science degree offers you the knowledge and skills necessary to be eligible to apply for registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) as a Paramedic.

Your transformation into a paramedic practitioner will develop over this three-year programme with the guidance of experts in multiple fields of medical practice and international medicine. The modules focus on building your intellectual skills and capabilities, clinical judgement skills, and confidence in performing the clinical skills and assessments required of you as a paramedic in a safe, capable and competent way.

As a paramedic, no two days will be the same. Our dynamic and multi-disciplinary course team will work to prepare you to assess, evaluate, diagnose and manage the clinical and personal needs of patients of all ages, taking into account the situation and environmental conditions. You鈥檒l gain experience of safe and timely care and transport of critically ill patients while under emergency (blue lights) as well as non-life-threatening conditions. You'll learn the fundamentals of equipping, maintaining and operating in emergency ambulances and rapid response vehicles. We鈥檒l support you to become an effective, capable clinician who can respond to and manage a wide spectrum of emergency and non-emergency situations. These may range from medical emergencies such as cardiac arrest and multi-system traumas, through minor illnesses and injury, to chronic conditions and psychological and mental health events.

Your studies will be split between practice and theory. Each year, 600 hours of your time will be centred in practice learning experience with NWAS and other local health care providers, learning the realities of life as a paramedic. You鈥檒l dedicate a further 900 hours per year to your theory studies at the University, complementing and enhancing your learning in the workplace. We鈥檒l guide you as you learn to resuscitate, stabilise, treat and assess patients using sophisticated techniques, equipment and drugs. You鈥檒l have the opportunity to gain experience in our cutting-edge Clinical Simulation Area and Suites, where you can learn techniques and practice using equipment in a safe and controlled environment. Your practice learning experience with NWAS will then build on these skills in the field. Some of the topics you鈥檒l study are out-of-hospital urgent care, trauma management, mental health, chronic conditions, pharmacology, social needs and maternal and obstetric emergencies. If the thought of helping people in these dynamic circumstances gets your blood rushing, then this is the course for you.

While developing your clinical knowledge and skills, this course will help build your leadership abilities, emotional intelligence, self-awareness, adaptability, confidence and resilience, preparing you to shoulder the decision-making responsibilities demanded by this healthcare profession. As a paramedic, you鈥檒l need to work with a high level of autonomy in often unpredictable and emergency situations. In addition to your patients, you鈥檒l interact with and support relatives, friends and members of the public. You鈥檒l also need to appreciate and respect the input and remit of a wide range of other healthcare professionals and emergency services such as the Police, Fire and Rescue Services as well as other Emergency Medical Technicians (MDTs). Importantly, you鈥檒l also need to take care of yourself and ensure your own wellbeing and safety while having the comfort of knowing you will always have support from the Univerisity of Bolton through any challenges you have on this course. We鈥檒l support you as you develop essential interpersonal and team working skills, along with vital decision-making and leadership qualities and the ability to remain calm and reassuring under stressful and potentially traumatic situations.

Overall, this employer-led training and qualification opportunity offers you the chance to graduate with the skills and knowledge needed to immediately enter this recognised and in-demand profession.

This programme is not a direct route to nursing or medical programmes. It is designed to prepare you for a specialised role working in the ambulance service.

What can I do with this qualification?

Registered paramedics are primarily employed by Ambulance Service NHS Trusts and are usually based at a local ambulance station. As a traditional emergency response paramedic, you鈥檒l be required to work shifts, including evenings and weekends, and to work in all types of weather conditions. In some cases, you鈥檒l be the senior member of a two-person team, with an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or Emergency Care Assistant (ECA) to support you. Alternatively, you may work on your own, for instance, as a motorbike or bicycle response unit. Other working environments include providing advice over the telephone from a control room and specialised units such as a Hazardous Area Response Team (HART), which may need to go into dangerous environments to treat and rescue patients.

Once you鈥檝e qualified, you could become a team leader, supervising other paramedics, EMTs and ECAs, specialise in a specific area such as strokes or even work for the air ambulance. With additional training, you could become a senior, advanced or consultant paramedic, which are senior roles with more responsibilities. Teaching, research and management roles are other options, and the 新加坡六合彩开奖直播 offers postgraduate opportunities that will support you to progress your career in these areas.

Additionally, paramedics are in increasing demand in urgent care, and you may find opportunities in walk-in centres, minor injuries units and GP practices. You might also seek work in the private sector; for instance, in remote environments such as expeditions and oil rigs.

Alternative career options

Graduates can also use the qualification as a stepping-stone into a range of other careers. For some of these roles, relevant experience and/or postgraduate study may be required. Possible areas of employment include:

  • Public health
  • Management
  • Armed forces
  • HE teaching
  • Clinical research
  • Universities

Teaching & Assessment

Modern paramedics require a range of skills and values, and our practice partners and tutors will help you gain understanding and experience of paramedic practice. We鈥檒l support you as you develop your skills in a safe and supportive environment. Learning focuses on the workplace environment, so you鈥檒l spend approximately half of your time in practice gaining on-the-job knowledge and experience, and devote the rest of your time to university learning and independent study. As every student is an individual, and we recognise that everyone learns differently, we aim to cater to all needs by using a blended learning approach.

Practice learning experience is a compulsory component of the course that enables you to develop the necessary competencies required for registration and practice as a registered paramedic. You will not be paid for this time, and travel expenses are not refunded as part of the course. For most of your practice learning experience, you'll be working alongside your dedicated mentor who will guide and develop your skills and knowledge. You'll follow your practice educator's compulsory clinical shift patterns, which will include unsociable hours, including days, nights, weekends, and bank holidays. You'll be expected to complete a minimum of 1,800 hours over the three years.

Your practice learning experience will be based at our partner NWAS NHS Trust (please note, travelling may be required). As you progress through the course, we鈥檒l guide and encourage you to draw on your practice learning experience while studying theory and apply the theory learned to your practice so that you can understand how the two complement each other. You'll be able to draw on knowledge and support from experienced paramedics both in the workplace and at the University.

We offer a wide variety of learning opportunities designed to arouse your curiosity and support your personal learning journey. Work-based learning and formal face-to-face timetabled sessions are combined with extensive online resources and our community of students, University tutors and practice educators. Our blended approach includes lectures, presentations, simulations delivered by tutors, seminars, tutorials, problem-based enquiry and work-based learning. The course is highly interactive, requiring you to collaborate with colleagues in the workplace and fellow students. Online and face-to-face learning and discussion will be essential. You鈥檒l also need to undertake a significant amount of guided independent study, such as background reading, preparing for seminar activities and working on assignments. You'll also be given opportunities for independent learning and recapping of work. This is a course designed for the people who will study on it so that they will be able to get the most out of it.

No student is expected to go through this course alone, so to help support your learning the University offers additional study skills sessions. These cover areas such as essay writing, library skills and electronic searching, and numeracy. You'll also have a personal tutor and access to various other mechanisms to help you succeed.

You can expect a range of assessment methods, such as coursework assignments, practice competencies, problem-based learning and examination of practice. The assessment of practice and theory both contribute to the final award.
