Michael studied at the University of Manchester and was awarded BSc (First class honours) Mathematics in 1988 and MSc Pure Mathematics in 1989. He continued to study at Manchester for a PhD in Algebraic Combinatorics, an application of algebra to counting problems, which he was awarded in 1992.

His main academic areas of interest are in abstract algebra, particularly group theory, ring theory and Galois theory.
