Given the competition, the idea of breaking into the film and television production industry can be a very daunting prospect for students. Many people let this deter them from chasing their dreams, but it is absolutely possible to break into the industry and enjoy a magical, vibrant career - you just need to know how. Here are four ways to boost your chances of turning your passion for storytelling into a lifelong career.
Before diving in head first, it鈥檚 important to understand that the film industry is multifaceted, with many roles beyond directing and screenwriting. Familiarise yourself with the work that鈥檚 involved in things like production management, editing and cinematography, as this will help you determine where your interests lie. For example, if you鈥檙e interested in screenwriting, working part-time as a book editor might help you learn more about narrative structure and familiarise yourself with the editing process.
Gaining hands-on experience of the day-to-day life on set is invaluable for aspiring filmmakers, and starting as a production runner can be one of the most accessible points of entry. Production runners are responsible for assisting various departments; handling tasks such as managing equipment, coordinating schedules and ensuring everything runs smoothly. You鈥檒l gain an unparalleled understanding of how a production company functions and make connections that can help set you up with a job later.
Tip: A good way to get noticed is to produce your own content (such as short films, documentaries or a web series) and publish it on YouTube. Not only will you gain valuable feedback from a real audience, but showcasing your creativity in such a way can catch the eye of production companies looking for fresh talent.
Remember, sometimes it isn鈥檛 what you know - it鈥檚 who you know. Building relationships with industry professionals, professors and other students in the real world and on will alert you to opportunities that you otherwise may have missed out on. Try to attend networking events, workshops and film screenings, where you can exchange information with potential mentors and peers. Don鈥檛 be afraid to reach out to people whose work you admire - you never know when they might be willing to talk!
